The Saint Joseph & Western Railroad Company (SJ&W) was organized in 1877. Merged into the Saint Joseph & Marysville Railroad in 1885, which in turn was merged the same year into the Saint Joseph & Grand Island Railroad (SJ&GI). The Union Pacific (UP) had control of the SJ&GI from 1879 forward. Most of the original SJ&W trackage has been abandoned, with a small segment still used by the UP. For auction is a capital stock certificate from the SJ&W from the 1870s; it is signed but was not issued. The vignette shows a steam engine pulling a passenger train departing a station.
