    Ryazhsk, Russia is a city located 200 miles southeast of Moscow. It is an important railway junction. Viasma (Vyazma), Russia is a town and the administrative center of Vyazemsky District in the Smolensk Oblast, Russia and is located on the Vyazma River. Throughout its turbulent history, Viasma has defensed the western approaches to Moscow. Ryazhsk and Viasma are about 250 miles apart. The two cities are connected by the closest east-west railroad south of Moscow, a line that serves important coal fields. For auction is a bond certificate issued to finance this railroad. The bond was for 125 Russian Rubles and paid 3% interest. It is dated 1889 and was due 1944. The bond was issued in Belgium.

    Included with the bond is a separate sheet that contains 24 bond payment coupons
    ; it measures appx 12 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Some of the bonds were clipped for redemption, but the
    bond became worthless with the Russian revolution
    and nationalization of the Russian railway system.
