Description
The
Savannah & Northwestern Railway
(S&NW) was incorporated in June 1910 as the
Brinson Railway
, replacing the original
Brinson Railway
chartered in 1906 by George M. Brinson. In 1914, the railroad changed its name to
Savannah & Northwestern Railway
, as George Brinson was no longer associated with the company. The
Brinson Railway
had assembled through purchase of existing tracks and its own construction a line from Savannah to St. Clair, where it made a connection with the
Georgia & Florida Railway
.
In 1916, the new
Savannah & Atlanta Railway
(S&A) completed a connection from the S&NW at St. Clair to the
Georgia Railroad
at Warrenton and Camak. The S&NW operated this extension under a traffic agreement until 1917, when it was merged into the S&A. The S&A was acquired in the 1950s by the
Central of Georgia Railway
, which was itself acquired in the 1960s by
Southern Railway
. Surviving S&NW lines are now part of
Norfolk Southern
.
Items from the S&NW are not often found. I offer
for auction an unissued capital stock certificate from the period 1906-1914
. It is
signed and sealed
. The
vignette shows a steamer pulling a consist of passenger cars
. The certificate is printed on typical stock/bond security paper. This item measures appx 12x8 inches and is printed on typical stock/bond security paper. It is in
excellent condition
, in spite of being
over 100 years old
. There are no rips or tears, and the only writing/markings are the signatures. It has the customary cancellation punch holes.
A nice item for any Georgia or Southern Railway railfan.
