Description
Up for auction is a nice Eversharp Skyline Fountain Pen with a Black Barrel, Section and Derby with a 1/10 14K Y.G.F. (Yellow Gold Filled) Cap. I really like Skyline fountain pens. A very unique design and well made. The pen was introduced in 1941 by Wahl-Eversharp. Strikingly modern in appearance, the Skyline (originally called the Skyliner) was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who also streamlined the steam locomotives of the New York Central Railroad’s famed
20th Century Limited
.
You do not need a very sharp eye to detect a strong resemblance between the locomotive and the Skylines!
I took the pen apart completely, even knocking the nib and feed out of the section; cleaned everything ultrasonically, then finished it off with a hand polish. I installed a new ink sac for maximum fill. Over-all length capped is 5 1/4 inches, and about 5 7/8 inches with the cap posted. This is a Standard size Skyline.
The derby, cap, barrel and section all look very good - just the usual normal use scratches and tiny dings; no teeth marks or cap dents. There is visible brassing on the filling lever. This is quite common. There is almost always some brassing on the filling lever caused by the cap rubbing on it every time it is posted. A slight design flaw.
On the upper cap ring there is an imprint: 'EVERSHARP SKYLINE PAT. MADE IN U.S.A.' Also, if you look at the clip where it intersects the upper cap ring, you'll notice two 'Check Marks'. This was Eversharp's indication of a Lifetime Warranty, like Sheaffer's White Dot, or Parker's Blue Diamond on the clip.
The 14K Solid Gold Banner nib looks fantastic - extremely clean. Eversharp had a reputation for making excellent nibs of varying line widths and flex and this is one of them. This nib is very clean, a very smooth writer. I'd judge it to be about an EF to a B point depending on writing pressure.
This is a very nice example of a vintage Eversharp Skyline Fountain Pen from the 1940's. This Skyline would make a great daily writer or an excellent addition to your fountain pen collection.
Oh, I said Navy in the writing sample but realized it was Black. I'll be listing a Navy Skyline as well.
