These bars are made from
Prime Steel
with a yield strength of over 52,000psi.  Common steel has a yield strength of only 20,000ps
These steel plates are
ground
so that edges are flat and perpendicular. To our knowledge we offer the
only ground edges in the market
. This insures maximum contact with your workpiece.
The actual pressing edges are the result of a proprietary 3 step process.  This "sharp", polished radius will "pick up" small ball bearing inner races, will last longer, and are less likely to "kick out" under load.
These are stand-alone plates up to 20 tons over a 4.25" span.
Use these over your existing press plates/bars on any press up to 150 ton.  This will distribute the load and help contain fragments, should your cast plates “scatter”.
None of our plates or bars will ever fracture.

History and Detail
Why we are listing these:
We have an economical 20 ton press and found that currently available press plates may be OK for backing larger shaft diameters, but the profiles are just not useful for the variety of work that we do.   In addition, we were shocked to learn that cast press plates can
brittle fracture,
under load, shooting fragments in all directions.  We searched on line and found pictures of gruesome facial injures resulting from “grenading” cast press plates.
Also, we had worn out press bars with "peened over" edges which caused them to occasionally separate and "kick out" under load - a dangerous situation.
Solution:
We had a few steel plates CNC cut to our specifications that have proven extremely helpful in the shop.
We offer these
highly engineered
plates measuring .75” X 5” X 7.125”.   They have 4 GRADUATED SHALLOW notches with ROUNDED ROOT RADII to accommodate shafts, pulleys, hubs, gears, bearing races etc., ranging from 1/4” diameter to approximately 6”.  Imported and "copy cat" plates have deep, sharp, right angled notches that, even when butted together will not accommodate common small shaft/bearing diameters.
Observe that, whereas a bar contacts your workpiece in one small area, a notched plate doubles the contact area. Our plates provide
appropriately
sized notches, that not only center and cradle the workpiece, but also provide twice the contact area compared to two straight bars.
FAQ
Why aren't these bars longer?
Answer: 20 ton presses have a front to back bed gap of about 4.25". These compact bars are plenty long to bridge this gap and hopefully to short to be miss-used as stand alone bars on larger presses. Of course all of our bars can be used to advantage as "toppers" over existing bars. Our bars are made from very expensive steel. Why waste good steel on too heavy, too long, hard to set-up tooling. Customers who use our press accessories agree!
