Description
Up for Purchase is thisamazing
collection of handmade German deer bone charivari chain accessory pieces, giving you a rare opportunity to customize your own chain for your lederhose or your traditional vest for your next Oktoberfest celebration!
I myself purchased this hand-crafted deer bone chain directly from a German artisan a decade ago in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the Oktoberfest. You don't typically see charivari chains with links made out of bone, but that's what this unique item features throughout. I knew it was going to be a little risky, as bone links are undeniably more fragile than the more common metal rings. Despite the potential issues, I can proudly say I made it through Oktoberfest successfully! However, the chain didn't
quite
make it on the flight back and a few bone rings were damaged.
That's why the chain is currently in three segments in the photos.
If I had a special heirloom-caliber silver chain of my own, I wouldn't have even considered listing this piece, instead opting to customize it myself. Alas, I don't have such a chain, and while I could have picked up a chain and went from there, I decided to go in an entirely different direction this year. So I thought it was important to get this into the hands of someone that can appreciate it for what it is and put it to great use, too! I can visualize these pieces being used at least three different ways, but I included a picture of a traditional route. You'll note that this example shows deer bone pieces connected together with metal links -
not
bone.
Here's a list of each item included with your purchase (
note
: there are
eight
bone links still connected to this piece, as I wanted to make it
your
choice to remove them, or not)
A. Deer Antler (Base Cross Section) Centerpiece
2-5/8" wide x 2-1/4" tall x 3/4" thick
Two 3/16" diameter connecting holes (left & right side)
Leather padding attached to the rear
Silver [1874] 1-Mark Deutsches Reich Coin
While I don't have a silver testing kit, I can confirm that the coin is
not
magnetic, a good sign, and the ice cube I placed on it for just a second immediately dethawed. It's surely silver, I just can't say what the percentage is. The market value for a year 1874 is at the minimum here on eBay, though this coin has been glued, of course.
B. (2x) Bone Plate with Edelweiss Flower Pin
2-3/4" wide x 3/4" tall x 3/16" thick
Two 3/16" diameter connecting holes (left & right side)
Metallic Edelweiss Pin
The one thing I know for certain is that the flower pins aren't solid silver because they're very magnetic. However, I can't say if they're made out of nickel, plated, or something else entirely.
C. (2x) Small Deer Horn Ends
Horn A
: 3-1/2" long x 2-1/2" wide x 3/8" thick
Horn B
: 2-7/8" long x 2-1/4" wide x 3/8" thick
Two 3/16" diameter connecting holes (spaced along the center)
Note that the two horns are different in size. The asymmetry the two pieces potentially created was a nonissue for me, as both cutoffs had adequate distance to separate them.
D. (2x) Sliding Metal Rings
3/4" outside diameter
spring loaded opening mechanism
The end rings have a worn-copper finish, blending well with deer bone, but less so with the coin and flowers.
